Programmers have their preferences when it comes to editing code and you can't really point out a good middle-ground solution. This is where Oni comes in. It is an attempt to bring two worlds together, by combining the advantages of modal editors, like Vim, and modern code editors, such as VSCode or Atom. How it does this is not really important, but what is important is the fact that you can work in a mouse-free environment and increase your productivity considerably.

Oni is free and open-source and it is available for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. Downloading and installing the application is a simple task and it should take only a few seconds to complete, even on slower systems. The hardware requirements are modest and there is no need to install any special tools or services.

The software doesn't look like much on the surface, but you will find a powerful functionality under its hood. First of all, it is based on Neovim, so an advanced text editing engine and a canvas renderer are features you can definitely expect to find. Furthermore, Oni can be expanded through VimL plugins and you can also configure it through JavaScript.

When it comes down to what you can actually do with Oni, you can enjoy all the advantages that modern-day code editors have to offer. This includes, but is not limited to, syntax highlighting, code auto-completion, a Fuzzy Finder, as well as a command pallet with a CMD-based interface. Supported languages are queried automatically, so the complete instructions will appear instantly as you begin to type them.

One of Oni's major advantages is the possibility of doing anything without touching the mouse. Opening a file, creating and naming new tabs, switching between them or performing any other operation can be done with the keyboard, through hotkeys and short commands. This way, you can stay focused on your work and finish without any kind of distractions.

Oni provides you with the advantages of all popular code editors and the drawbacks of none.

Pros

The software combines the advantages of multiple modern code editors. It provides all the advanced features you need to write code in a comfortable and efficient manner. You can perform any operation without touching the mouse.

Cons

You will need to spend some time to learn all the commands and how to use them.
